Spooky Traditions & How We Celebrate in Melbourne
Halloween’s roots are as old and shadowy as the festival itself.
It began over 2,000 years ago with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a night when the boundary between the living and the dead was said to dissolve. People believed spirits could cross over, bringing mischief or even danger. To protect themselves, villagers lit towering bonfires, told chilling ghost stories, and disguised themselves in frightening costumes to confuse wandering souls.
These eerie customs spread through Ireland, Scotland, and Europe, blending with Christian All Hallows’ Eve celebrations and autumn harvest traditions. In Ireland, people began carving gruesome faces into hollowed-out turnips and placing candles inside, grim little lanterns designed to scare away evil spirits.
